My first year in Phuket, I needed a routine liver function test and had absolutely no idea where to go. Back home in Europe, you just get a GP referral and the NHS handles the rest. Here? I ended up wandering into Bangkok Hospital Phuket on autopilot and walked out ฿4,500 lighter for a basic panel. Expensive lesson.

Seven years on, I know exactly where to go depending on whether I want speed, price, or specialist analysis. This guide covers the labs available to expats in Phuket, typical prices for common tests, how to book, and what to do when results come in English (or confusingly, in Thai).

Quick Facts — Blood Tests in Phuket

  • Basic CBC at government hospital: ฿200–฿400
  • Full metabolic panel at Bangkok Hospital: ฿2,500–฿4,500
  • Most results returned same-day (standard panels)
  • Fasting usually required: 8–12 hours before draw
  • Walk-in labs available at Siriroj and Vachira hospitals
  • STD testing available confidentially at Bangkok Hospital and Red Cross Phuket

Where to Get Blood Tests in Phuket

Phuket has three tiers of lab facilities, each with a different cost-speed-quality profile. Knowing which to use for what saves both time and money.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket — Best Quality, Highest Cost

Bangkok Hospital Phuket on Hongyok Uthit Road is the gold standard for lab work on the island. Their in-house laboratory handles an enormous range of tests with CAP-accredited quality standards. Results for standard panels are typically ready in 2–4 hours; same-day for most routine work. The catch: you generally need to see a doctor first (consultation fee ฿800–฿1,500), and the test fees are the most expensive on the island.

That said, if your insurance covers it — and most expat plans do for medically necessary tests — Bangkok Hospital is the easy choice. English-speaking staff throughout, online results portal, and excellent documentation for insurance claims.

Siriroj Hospital — Best Value with International Standards

Siriroj Hospital on Yaowarat Road in Phuket Town is a private hospital but charges significantly less than Bangkok Hospital. Their laboratory is well-equipped and handles routine panels quickly. Crucially, Siriroj often allows walk-in blood draws for standard panels at their lab reception without requiring a doctor consultation — saving you ฿800–฿1,500 right there.

This is my personal go-to for routine checks. The lab is on the ground floor, English-speaking staff at reception, and results come via the hospital app or a printed report you collect at the lab counter.

Vachira Hospital — Affordable Government Option

Vachira Hospital on Yaowarat Road is a government hospital — which means it's affordable and always busy. Blood tests here cost a fraction of private hospital rates (CBC for ฿150–฿200, basic metabolic for under ฿800). The trade-off: queues are real, English language service is limited, and result turnaround can be next-day rather than same-day.

For expats with no insurance and a tight budget, Vachira is entirely viable for routine tests. For urgent or specialist panels, go private.

Independent Diagnostic Labs

Several independent diagnostic centres operate in Phuket Town, including branches of Lab Thai, Bumrungrad Lab Network, and a few smaller outfits near the hospital cluster on Yaowarat Road. These are worth exploring for specific panels where hospital overhead pushes prices up. Some offer competitive rates for STD panels, hormone tests, and food intolerance profiles — but verify accreditation before using them for results you'll need to share with a doctor.

Does Your Health Insurance Cover Lab Tests?

How to Book and What to Expect

Booking at Bangkok Hospital Phuket

Call +66 76 254 425 or use the Bangkok Hospital app to book a same-day or next-day appointment with a general practitioner or your usual specialist. Mention you need blood work — the doctor will order tests and give you a lab slip. The lab is on the ground floor of the main building. Pay at the cashier after collecting results. Results available via patient portal or printed at the lab counter.

Walk-In at Siriroj

Arrive fasting (if required), go directly to the lab reception on the ground floor, and explain what tests you need. For standard panels, reception staff can process you without a prior doctor appointment. You'll pay upfront (cash or card), receive a number, and wait in the lab waiting area. Results usually ready in 2–4 hours — collect at the same counter or receive via the Siriroj app.

At Vachira Hospital

Head to the outpatient department, register as an outpatient (you'll need your passport), and queue for a doctor consultation. The doctor orders tests and you proceed to the lab. Expect queues of 30–90 minutes in peak morning hours. Bring something to read and arrive early (7:30–8:00am for shortest queues).

Practical Tip: Fasting for Blood Tests

If your test requires fasting, book a morning appointment (7:30–9:30am). You can have water — in fact, being well-hydrated makes the blood draw easier and faster. Arrive with a small snack for immediately after, especially in Phuket's heat. Fainting after a fasted blood draw in tropical temperatures is more common than you'd think.

Understanding Results: English vs Thai

Bangkok Hospital results come printed in English with reference ranges clearly marked. Most other Phuket hospitals print results in both Thai and English, though some older printouts from Vachira may be mostly in Thai script. If you get a Thai-language result, the lab staff can usually annotate the key values — or photograph it and run it through Google Translate Lens for a quick read.

Reference ranges vary slightly by lab. Don't panic at mild out-of-range flags — these are common and often clinically insignificant. Always discuss results with a doctor before making any health decisions.

Health Insurance and Blood Tests

If you have comprehensive expat health insurance — Cigna, Pacific Cross, AXA, or Allianz — medically necessary blood tests ordered by a physician are almost always covered. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is a direct billing partner for most major insurers, meaning you pay nothing upfront and the hospital bills your insurer directly.

Annual health screenings (executive check-up packages) may require a separate wellness benefit rider on your plan, or you may need to pay out of pocket and claim later. Check your plan's Section 9 (Health Screening) or equivalent. See our full comparison of expat health plans available in Phuket for details on what each covers.

STD and Sexual Health Testing in Phuket

Sexual health testing is available confidentially at Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Siriroj, and through the Phuket Red Cross on Damrong Rd in Phuket Town. The Red Cross offers anonymous HIV testing for a small donation (฿50–฿200), no appointment needed. Results in 20 minutes for rapid tests.

Bangkok Hospital's full STD screen (HIV, Hep B, Hep C, syphilis, HSV, chlamydia, gonorrhoea) runs ฿2,000–฿3,500 depending on individual tests selected. All are handled with complete discretion. If you're newly arrived in Phuket and were sexually active before arrival, an initial baseline screen is a sensible precaution.

Specialist Lab Tests: What Requires Bangkok

Most routine and intermediate tests can be processed in Phuket. However, some specialist tests are sent to reference laboratories in Bangkok and require a longer wait:

Bangkok Hospital will advise at consultation if your test requires external processing. Factor the additional wait time into your planning — if you're traveling, arrange results to reach your email or the patient portal rather than requiring an in-person collection.

Annual Health Checks in Phuket

Most expats in Phuket benefit from an annual health screen. Bangkok Hospital, Siriroj, and Vachira all offer packaged health check programmes. See our dedicated guide to annual health check packages in Phuket for a full breakdown of what's included at each price point (from ฿1,500 at Vachira to ฿18,000+ at Bangkok Hospital for the premium executive screen including CT scans and cardiac assessment).

For expats over 50, an annual screen covering cardiovascular risk, thyroid, prostate/ovarian markers, and metabolic function is strongly recommended — Phuket's sedentary coastal lifestyle combined with heat, tropical diet, and (often) increased alcohol consumption creates a specific health risk profile that warrants regular monitoring. See our guide to healthcare for retirees in Phuket for age-specific recommendations.
