Craft beer in Phuket is a niche pursuit — but it is a growing one. The island's default is still Chang on ice at a beach bar for 80 THB, and there is a time and place for that. But if you want an IPA that actually tastes of hops, or a proper stout on a cool Phuket evening, the island has more to offer than you might expect.

This is a realistic guide: what is actually here, where to find it, what it costs, and how Phuket's craft scene compares to Bangkok or Chiang Mai (smaller, but improving). Read on for the honest picture.

Thai Craft Beer: What Is Available in Phuket

Thailand's craft beer scene is small relative to the country's size, constrained by expensive brewing licences and distribution challenges. Bangkok has a much wider selection than anywhere else. Phuket gets a subset of what is available in the capital.

Thai Craft Brands to Look For

  • Chitbeer: Bangkok-based, well-distributed. Clean lagers and ales, reliably good.
  • Sandport Brewing: Solid Thai craft. Pale ale and wheat beer are approachable and well-made.
  • Full Moon Brewery: One of Thailand's longer-established craft operations.
  • Chalawan: Tropical-influenced ales using local ingredients. Worth trying if you find them.
  • Phuket Lager: Not craft but worth noting — the island's own mass-market lager, slightly different from mainland Singha. Cold at a beach bar for 70 THB it is fine.
Insider tip: Availability of Thai craft beers in Phuket changes frequently. The most reliable approach is to find one good bottle shop or craft bar in your area and ask what is currently in stock. The craft beer community here is small enough that bartenders at the good spots genuinely know their inventory.

Imported Craft Beer

Imported craft beer is available at specialist bottle shops and some bars — mainly European (German, Belgian, Czech, British) with some American. Prices are high due to import duties: 200–400 THB at bars, 150–280 THB from bottle shops. German wheat beers and Belgian abbey ales are the most reliably available imports.

Craft Beer Bars and Taprooms by Area

Phuket Town

Phuket Town has the best craft beer scene on the island, partly because it has the most discerning local clientele and partly because the old quarter's bar scene is built around interesting, atmospheric venues rather than tourist beach bars. Several craft-focused bars have opened in the old Sino-Portuguese shophouse district, serving rotating Thai craft selections alongside European imports.

Walk the old town bar strip in the evening and look for venues with proper tap handles or fridges stocked with labelled craft bottles rather than the standard Chang/Singha display. Prices are reasonable: 150–220 THB for a Thai craft pint.

Bang Tao and Laguna

Bang Tao's nightlife is more restaurant-bar than dedicated taproom, but several venues in the Boat Avenue and Cherng Talay strip stock reasonable craft and premium beer selections. The clientele leans affluent — the selection favours recognisable imported lagers alongside some craft options. Not a craft beer destination per se, but you can find good beer here if you ask.

Rawai and Nai Harn

Rawai has a handful of expat-facing bars that stock craft options alongside standard Thai beers. The vibe is casual — somewhere between sports bar and local dive bar — but with genuine selection. A few bottle shops in the Rawai area carry Thai craft and imported options for home drinking. See our Rawai and Nai Harn area guide for a broader overview of the neighbourhood.

Kamala

Kamala is small and the bar scene reflects that, but there is a genuinely low-key expat bar culture here with more depth than the tourist strip suggests. A couple of spots stock craft options and are worth investigating if you live in the area.

Bottle Shops: Taking Craft Beer Home

If you prefer drinking at home or want to stock up, Phuket has a small number of bottle shops that go beyond the standard convenience store selection. Look for specialist shops in Phuket Town and Bang Tao.

Craft Beer Events and Community

Phuket's craft beer community is small but active. Periodic beer events — organised by Phuket Town bars or by Bangkok-based communities doing island pop-ups — are worth following. The best way to stay informed is to befriend staff at the better craft bars in Phuket Town, join Phuket expat Facebook groups, and follow relevant Instagram accounts for bar announcements.

Honest Assessment: How Good Is Phuket for Craft Beer?

Honest answer: Phuket is a 3.5/5 for craft beer. The island's bar scene is primarily built around tourism and beach life — Chang on ice, cocktails by the pool, wine at upscale restaurants. Craft beer is a side dish here, not the main course.

That said: if you know where to go, you can drink genuinely good beer in Phuket. The Phuket Town old quarter has enough good bars now to constitute a proper crawl. Bang Tao has improved. The bottle shop situation is workable. And the Thai craft beer industry itself is improving year on year.
