Water Sports in Phuket: Complete Activity Guide 2026

Published: 18 November 2026· 12 min read· By

One of the underrated things about living in Phuket is having world-class water sports at your doorstep year-round — just not always the same ones. The island flips between surf season and dive/sail season with the monsoon, and knowing which activity is right for which time of year changes everything.

The Phuket Water Sports Calendar: Season Is Everything

Phuket's water sports scene divides cleanly into two seasons. Dry season (November–April): flat west coast, calm seas, perfect visibility — ideal for diving, sailing, snorkelling, kayaking, and offshore fishing. Monsoon season (May–October): southwest swell rolls in, west coast beaches get waves — this is surf and kitesurfing season. Many dive boats reduce operations during peak monsoon months.

The east coast (Chalong Bay, Ao Yon, Cape Panwa, Rawai harbour area) is protected from the southwest swell and stays relatively calm year-round — this is where fishing charters, long-tail boat trips, and sailing depart from even during monsoon season.

Water Sports by Activity

🏄 Surfing

May–OctoberKata, Kalim, Nai HarnLessons from 800 THB

Phuket has Thailand's best surf. Kata beach is the most consistent and beginner-friendly — a sheltered bay with gentle 1–2m swells during monsoon season. Kalim beach (just north of Patong, on the Patong to Kamala road) is the island's premier surf spot — a reef break that can produce clean 2–3m waves during peak monsoon swells. Nai Harn gets good beach break waves from the southwest. Surfboard rentals at Kata: 100–150 THB/hour. Beginner lessons: 800–1,200 THB/2hrs including board and instructor. Kata Surf School and Surf House Phuket at Kata are well-established schools.

🪁 Kitesurfing

May–OctoberNai Harn, RawaiIKO course ~15,000 THB

The southern tip of Phuket — Nai Harn and Rawai — catches the best consistent kite winds during the southwest monsoon. Several IKO-certified kite schools operate from Rawai beach. A full beginner IKO certification course (12–15 hours of instruction) costs 12,000–18,000 THB. Equipment rental once certified: 2,000–3,000 THB/day. This is a serious sport requiring real instruction — don't attempt it without proper lessons. The expat kitesurfing community in Rawai is tight-knit and welcoming to new kiters.

🏄 Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

Year-roundMost beaches300–500 THB/hour

SUP is the most accessible water sport in Phuket — available year-round at almost every beach. During calm conditions (dry season, or protected east coast), it's ideal. During monsoon season, stick to sheltered bays (Rawai, Ao Yon, Chalong Bay). Rental: 300–500 THB/hour from beach operators. SUP yoga is offered by several yoga studios in Bang Tao and Rawai — morning sessions on calm water, 800–1,200 THB per session.

🚣 Sea Kayaking — Phang Nga Bay

Year-roundDay trip from Phuket1,500–3,500 THB/person

Phang Nga Bay — 45 minutes from Phuket by road then boat — is one of the world's great sea kayaking destinations. Paddling through sea caves into hidden hongs (limestone lagoons) is genuinely spectacular and one of the things I still do repeatedly after six years here. Day trip operators depart from Tha Nua pier near Phuket Town (north) or you can join tours that depart from various Phuket hotels. Cost: 1,500–2,500 THB for group tours, 2,500–3,500 THB for smaller private tours. John Gray's Sea Canoe is the premium choice; more affordable operators run from various piers.

🏎️ Wakeboarding & Water Skiing

Year-roundChalong cable park300–500 THB/30 min

Phuket has a cable wakeboard park near Chalong that operates year-round without needing a boat — the cable system pulls you around a circular course. Sessions: 300–500 THB for 30 minutes. Good for beginners (no boat wash, consistent speed) and experienced riders. Traditional boat-towed wakeboarding is also offered by watersports centres at Bang Tao and Rawai. Expect to pay 1,500–2,500 THB/hour for a boat session.

⛵ Sailing & Yacht Charters

Year-roundChalong PierFrom 3,000 THB/day

Phuket is Southeast Asia's premier sailing destination. Chalong Pier is the hub for yacht charters, sailing schools, and the annual King's Cup Regatta (December). Royal Phuket Marina in Koh Kaew and Boat Lagoon in Koh Kaew also host fleets. Day charter for a catamaran to Phi Phi or Racha Islands: 3,000–8,000 THB per person (group) or 25,000–60,000 THB for a private boat. Sailing lessons and ASA/RYA certification courses are available from several Chalong-based schools. → Read our full Sailing & Yachting in Phuket guide for marina-by-marina breakdowns, racing events, and liveaboard costs.

Jet Skiing: A Note of Caution

Jet skiing is available at most tourist beaches, but it's one of the few water activities in Phuket with a genuine scam risk. The "jet ski damage scam" — where operators claim you damaged their machine and demand cash — has affected tourists and expats alike, particularly at Patong. If you rent a jet ski, photograph the machine thoroughly before departing, never leave a passport as deposit, and consider renting from larger operators with clear paperwork rather than individual beach operators. Or choose a different activity entirely — Phuket's water sports menu is long enough that you don't need the stress.
