Living in Phuket means you have some of Southeast Asia's best day trips on your doorstep. The Phi Phi Islands, James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay, the Similan Islands, and the quieter mainland coast of Khao Lak are all within reach — and they're genuinely spectacular. But there's a huge difference between a cheap group tour experience and doing these trips right. After six years of showing friends and family around, here's the honest assessment.
Quick Verdict: What's Worth It
| Destination | Worth It? | Best For | Avoid If |
|---|---|---|---|
| James Bond Island / Phang Nga Bay | ✅ Yes | Everyone — families, couples, first-timers | You hate crowds on budget tours |
| Phi Phi Islands | ✅ Yes (go early) | Snorkelling, beach, party crowd | You expect a quiet paradise |
| Similan Islands | ✅✅ Yes (best trip) | Divers, serious snorkellers, nature lovers | You get very seasick; doing it from Phuket (far) |
| Khao Lak | ✅ Yes (underrated) | Quieter beaches, Similan gateway | You want nightlife or a resort feel |
| Racha Islands | ✅ Good half-day | Easy snorkelling close to Phuket | Comparing to Similan quality |
| Coral Island (Koh Hae) | ⚠️ Skip usually | Very short transfer, easy for kids | You care about coral quality or privacy |
Phi Phi Islands: Still Worth It
The Phi Phi Islands — Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh — are 45 minutes by speedboat from Rassada Pier (south Phuket) or about 90 minutes by slow ferry from Rasada. They remain some of the most photographed islands in Thailand, and the images aren't lying. But the experience depends enormously on how you go and when.
Maya Bay: Go Early or Not at All
Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh — where The Beach was filmed — was closed from 2018–2021 to allow coral recovery. It has genuinely recovered and is now controlled: maximum 375 visitors at a time, no anchoring in the bay. The result is that early arrivals (boats reaching before 9am) get a genuinely beautiful experience. Boats arriving after 11am face a queue and crowds. Leave Phuket by 7am on a private or semi-private speedboat to get there right.
Phi Phi Don (the inhabited island) is touristy and can be hectic at the main pier, but Loh Dalum Bay is beautiful and the viewpoint is worth the climb. Good snorkelling at several bays with a private boat. The overnight crowd who base themselves here tend to have a better experience than day-trippers.
Phi Phi Islands
Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Loh Samah Bay. Best with private speedboat for flexibility on timing.
James Bond Island / Phang Nga Bay
Khao Phing Kan, sea caves, Koh Panyee floating village. Best family trip from Phuket. Dramatic scenery.
Similan Islands
World-class diving and snorkelling. Granite boulders, leopard sharks, manta rays (in season). Long rough journey from Phuket — better as overnight or from Khao Lak.
Khao Lak Coast
Quieter beaches than Phuket (Bang Niang, Khuk Khak), Tsunami Memorial, Similan departure point. Genuinely beautiful and underrated.
James Bond Island & Phang Nga Bay
The most reliable day trip from Phuket — accessible, spectacular, and suitable for almost anyone. The iconic limestone karst that appeared in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) as Scaramanga's island is called Khao Phing Kan, and it's part of a broader Phang Nga Bay experience that also includes sea kayaking through caves, visiting Koh Panyee (a Muslim fishing village built on stilts), and dozens of dramatic karst islands emerging from green water.
The key differentiator: budget large-boat tours (฿900–1,200) herd you through with hundreds of other tourists and a mediocre buffet lunch. Private or semi-private speedboat tours (฿8,000–15,000 for the boat, split between your group) allow you to control timing and stop at uncrowded spots. For a family of 4, the private boat works out only slightly more expensive per person — and the experience is incomparably better.
The budget tours all arrive at James Bond Island between 10:30am and 1pm — that's when it's most crowded. A private boat leaving Phuket at 7am reaches Khao Phing Kan before 9am, when you can often be almost alone at the famous rock. Same applies for sea caves: morning is better for light and fewer boats.
Similan Islands: The Best Trip, Done Right
If there's one trip worth doing properly from Phuket's base, it's the Similan Islands (Mu Ko Similan National Park). Nine granite islands in the Andaman Sea with genuinely world-class diving — leopard sharks, manta rays (at Koh Bon and Koh Tachai nearby), whale sharks in season (February–April), and some of the clearest water in Thailand.
The honest logistical reality: from Phuket's Tha Chat Chai pier, the boat journey is approximately 2.5–3 hours each way. That's a 10+ hour day total with potential for rough seas (October–November the Andaman can be choppy). For most people, doing the Similans as an overnight liveaboard from Phuket (฿5,000–8,000/person for 2D1N) or as a day trip from Khao Lak (Tab Lamu Pier — only 1.5 hours to the islands) is a significantly better experience. Phuket-based dive shops can organise both options.
Racha Islands: Easy Half-Day from Rawai
The Racha Islands (Racha Yai and Racha Noi) are 30–40 minutes by speedboat from Rawai Pier — making them the most accessible island day trip from the south of Phuket. Racha Yai has good beginner dive sites and clear snorkelling in calm bays. The coral isn't as impressive as the Similans but the short journey makes it doable even in a half-day. Cost: ฿800–1,500 for a group tour including snorkelling gear, or ฿6,000–9,000 for a private speedboat.
Getting There: Logistics by Trip
| Destination | Departure Point | Travel Time | Group Tour Cost | Private Boat Cost | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phi Phi Islands | Rassada Pier / Chalong Pier | 45 min speedboat | ฿1,200–1,800/pp | ฿8,000–15,000/boat | Nov–May best |
| James Bond Island | Ao Pho / Tha Nuea pier | 45–60 min speedboat | ฿900–1,500/pp | ฿8,000–15,000/boat | Year-round |
| Similan Islands (day trip) | Tha Chat Chai (N Phuket) | 2.5–3 hrs | ฿3,000–5,000/pp | ฿20,000–35,000/boat | Oct–May only |
| Similan via Khao Lak | Tab Lamu Pier, Khao Lak | 1.5 hrs | ฿2,500–3,500/pp | ฿12,000–20,000/boat | Oct–May only |
| Racha Islands | Rawai Pier | 30–40 min | ฿800–1,500/pp | ฿6,000–9,000/boat | Nov–Apr calmest |
| Khao Lak (driving) | Drive from Phuket | 75–90 min | Car hire ฿800–1,500/day | Own vehicle | Year-round |
Booking Tips
- Book group tours 1–2 days ahead in high season (December–February); day-of availability is common May–October
- Private boat charters are bookable through major dive shops (Chalong area), beach club concierge desks, and reputable tour operators — compare 3 quotes for private boats
- Similan Islands tickets include a National Park fee of ฿500 per person — included in tour prices but confirm when booking
- Travel insurance that covers water activities (boat trips, snorkelling) is strongly recommended for all these trips
- Seasickness: the Andaman can be rough October–November and June–September. Take Dramamine the evening before and morning of if you're prone
