HeadStart International School Phuket Review 2026

HeadStart is Phuket's third major international school option — smaller than BISP, different in character from UWC, and often overlooked by families who default to the larger names. Here's what it actually offers and who it's right for.

About HeadStart International School Phuket

HeadStart International School has two campuses in Phuket: the primary campus in Rawai (south Phuket) and a secondary campus in Chalong. This location is a significant practical consideration — most Phuket expat families live in the north and west of the island (Bang Tao, Kamala, Surin), making HeadStart's south Phuket location inconvenient unless you're based in Rawai, Nai Harn, or Chalong.

However, for families in south Phuket, HeadStart is the obvious local choice and avoids the long daily commute to Koh Kaew or Thalang. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and Cambridge International Examinations.

Curriculum

HeadStart follows the British National Curriculum at primary level and Cambridge IGCSE at secondary, with A-Levels available at Sixth Form. It does not offer the IB Diploma — which is either a drawback or irrelevant depending on your family's university pathway priorities.

The Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level pathway is the traditional British university preparation route and is very well-regarded by UK universities. For families heading back to the UK for university, this is a perfectly valid — and arguably more familiar — pathway than the IB.

Fees

HeadStart Tuition Fees (2025–2026, indicative)

Early Years / Reception~280,000–320,000 THB/year
Primary (Years 1–6)~350,000–420,000 THB/year
Secondary (Years 7–11)~450,000–520,000 THB/year
Sixth Form (A-Levels)~550,000 THB/year

HeadStart is noticeably cheaper than BISP at all year levels — typically 30–40% less. For a family with two school-age children, this difference can be 400,000–600,000 THB per year, which is significant. Families on expat packages that don't fully cover school fees often find HeadStart makes the finances work where BISP would not.

School Character and Culture

The most consistent feedback from HeadStart parents is about the school's size and atmosphere. With significantly fewer students than BISP, it has a more intimate, community feel — teachers know every student by name, children don't get lost in a large cohort, and the parent community is tight-knit.

Academically, the school is solid — IGCSE results are competitive and the teaching quality is good. But HeadStart doesn't have BISP's sports infrastructure, performing arts facilities, or breadth of extracurricular activities. For families where the school's social and extracurricular offering is important, this matters.

The south Phuket location means the student body skews towards families living in Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong, and Kata/Karon — a more permanent-resident community than the northern resort areas. HeadStart parents often comment on the school's sense of stability and lower turnover than BISP, where families arrive and leave more frequently on two or three year corporate postings.

Admissions

HeadStart is generally easier to enter than BISP, particularly at primary level. The admissions process involves an application and school reports; assessments are held for secondary entry. The school is responsive — families often report a faster turnaround on applications than the larger schools.

For mid-year entry, places are often available, especially at primary level. Contact the admissions team directly with your timeline.

Is HeadStart Right for Your Family?

HeadStart is the right choice if you're living in south Phuket and want to avoid a long daily commute, or if budget is a serious consideration, or if you want a smaller, more intimate school community. It's a genuinely good school — not a compromise option. Families who make the active choice to send their children there, rather than defaulting to BISP, often report high satisfaction. Frequently Asked Questions

Where is HeadStart International School in Phuket?
HeadStart has two campuses: the primary school in Rawai (south Phuket) and the secondary school in Chalong. This makes it the most convenient international school option for families based in Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong, or Kata/Karon. Families in north Phuket (Bang Tao, Surin) typically prefer BISP or UWC due to the distance.
How much does HeadStart cost compared to BISP?
HeadStart is typically 30-40% cheaper than BISP. Fees range from approximately 280,000 THB/year for Early Years to 550,000 THB/year for A-Level Sixth Form, compared to BISP's 490,000-780,000 THB range. For a family with two children, this can mean saving 400,000-600,000 THB per year.
Does HeadStart offer the IB Diploma?
No — HeadStart offers the British National Curriculum at primary level, Cambridge IGCSE at secondary, and A-Levels at Sixth Form. It does not offer the IB Diploma. For families planning UK university applications, this A-Level pathway is well-recognised. For US or European universities, IB is often preferred, in which case BISP or UWC may be a better fit.
Is HeadStart International School accredited?
Yes. HeadStart is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and Cambridge International Examinations. These are the two key accreditations for international schools and confirm the school meets internationally recognised standards for curriculum delivery and governance.
What is the student community like at HeadStart Phuket?
HeadStart has a smaller, more intimate community than BISP — parents frequently mention that teachers know every student by name and the school has a tight-knit feel. The student body skews towards longer-term Phuket residents in south Phuket, giving the school more stability and lower turnover than the larger northern schools.
