Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) Phuket Guide 2026

Thailand launched the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) in 2024 — a 5-year, multi-entry visa giving 180 days per stay. It is the clearest legal path for remote workers and digital nomads who want to base themselves in Phuket.

What Is the DTV Visa?

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a 5-year multiple-entry visa introduced by Thailand in 2024. Each entry allows a stay of up to 180 days (extendable once by another 180 days at a local Immigration office). It targets remote workers, digital nomads, freelancers, and individuals who want to spend extended time in Thailand without committing to a long-term residency programme.

Who it is for

The DTV is ideal for anyone who works remotely (employed abroad or freelance), wants 6-month stays in Phuket, and does not qualify or want the Thailand Elite (expensive) or LTR (high financial requirements) visas.

Can You Work in Phuket on a DTV?

This is the nuanced question. The DTV does not include a work permit — meaning you cannot legally be employed by a Thai company or work for Thai clients. However, Thailand's official guidance states that remote work for a foreign employer or clients is the intended use case.

In practice, thousands of digital nomads and freelancers use the DTV to work from Phuket for their international clients. This is the de facto accepted interpretation. If you are on Thai payroll or serving Thai clients professionally, you would need a Non-B visa with a work permit.

How to Apply for the DTV

Apply at a Thai consulate or embassy outside Thailand — you cannot get the DTV from inside the country. The process:

Once in Phuket, you can extend your 180-day stay by a further 180 days at Phuket Immigration Office in Chalong for ฿1,900.

💡 Phuket insight

Co-working spaces in Phuket — particularly in Bang Tao (CAMP, Yellow, Boxspace) and Phuket Town (Sandbox) — are accustomed to DTV holders and can often provide letters confirming your co-working membership, which some consulates request as part of the "remote work base" evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I stay in Thailand on a DTV?
180 days per entry. You can extend once at Phuket Immigration Office for an additional 180 days — giving you up to 360 days in total before you need to leave and re-enter. The DTV is valid for 5 years with multiple entries.
Can I get a DTV inside Thailand?
No. The DTV must be applied for at a Thai consulate or embassy outside Thailand. You cannot convert a tourist visa or visa exemption entry to a DTV from inside the country.
What bank balance do I need for a DTV?
You need to show ฿500,000 (approximately USD 14,000 or GBP 11,000) in your bank account. This is a lower threshold than the Non-OA retirement visa (฿800,000) or LTR visa.
Do I need health insurance for the DTV?
Yes — health insurance is required with minimum coverage of ฿40,000 outpatient and ฿400,000 inpatient per claim. Most international expat health policies meet this threshold. Check with your insurer before applying.
Can my family members get a DTV too?
Dependants (spouse and children) can apply for DTV visas independently if they meet the requirements. There is no formal family DTV category — each applicant must demonstrate their own financial and remote-work credentials.
