Why You Need a Thai Bank Account
If you're living in Phuket or planning to stay longer than a few weeks, a Thai bank account isn't optional—it's foundational to daily life here. Here's why:
- Rent and utilities: Most Thai landlords want bank transfers or PromptPay, not cash. Electricity, water, and internet go through PromptPay QR codes.
- Retirement visa: Non-OA retirement visas require ฿800,000 in a Thai account for 3 months before application.
- Salary: If you're working legally, your employer will pay into a Thai account.
- ATM fees: Foreign cards charge ฿200–220 per withdrawal. Thai accounts have free ATM access at their bank.
- Daily spending: Thai life runs on PromptPay QR codes and bank transfers. Most shops, markets, and restaurants use them.

Opening a KBank Account in Phuket: Step by Step
This is the most straightforward path for expats arriving in Phuket without connections.
Go to KBank Yaowarat Road
This is the most expat-experienced branch on the island. The staff are patient with documentation questions and speak English.
Bring required documents
Passport, current visa (anything but a tourist stamp if possible), and proof of Phuket address.
Address proof options
Rental contract, utility bill in your name, hotel letter (ask your hotel manager to write one on letterhead), or condo purchase agreement.
Fill in the application
Staff will help. Most forms have English versions or someone who can translate. Takes 10–15 minutes.
Bring initial deposit
Minimum is ฿500–2,000, but bring ฿5,000 to have breathing room and show intent.
Account opens same day
Debit card issued immediately or mailed within 3 days. You'll have online access that day.
Set up PromptPay
Download KBank app, register, go to settings, and link your phone number to PromptPay. Done in 5 minutes.
What Visa Do You Actually Need?
The honest answer: more flexible visas make the process easier, but it's not impossible on a tourist stamp.
Tourist visa (30-day stamp)
Technically possible but harder. Some branches refuse. KBank Yaowarat Road sometimes accepts with a hotel letter and proof of address. Immigration and Customs take tourists seriously if you show intent to stay.
Non-B, Non-OA, ED visa
Straightforward. Staff assume you're committed to staying and will process you quickly.
LTR visa
Easiest path. Staff recognize the visa and know you've cleared background checks. Usually takes 20 minutes.
No visa
Nearly impossible without local connections or large deposits.
Wise as an Alternative (Not a Replacement)
Wise isn't a Thai bank account, but it solves 60% of what expats need in the first month.
What Wise does well:
- Send money to Thailand in seconds; hold THB in your Wise wallet
- Wise card gives you 2 free ATM withdrawals per month (up to ฿5,000 each)
- Some landlords accept Wise THB transfers directly
- No monthly fees; conversion rates are better than banks
What Wise cannot do:
- Receive Thai baht salary or government transfers
- Set up PromptPay for QR code payments
- Count as a Thai savings account for retirement visa
Best practice: Use Wise first for immediate spending, then open KBank within a week for long-term life.
PromptPay: The Key to Thai Daily Life
PromptPay is an instant bank transfer system tied to your phone number or Thai ID. It's ubiquitous in Thailand.
How to set it up:
- Open your KBank app
- Go to Settings → PromptPay
- Link your phone number
- Done. Instant.
Use cases:
- Paying rent to landlords
- Splitting bills with roommates
- Paying utility bills (electricity, water, internet)
- Convenience store purchases at 7-Eleven
- Restaurant bills and market stalls
- Tipping and small transactions
Scan the QR code with your KBank app, approve the payment, and it's done in 3 seconds. No fees.
Avoiding ATM Fees: The Real Cost
Every ATM in Thailand charges foreigners ฿200–220 per withdrawal. It adds up fast.
Solution 1: Wise Card
Up to 2 free ATM withdrawals per month (up to ฿5,000 each). Covers basic cash needs without fees.
Solution 2: Revolut Card
Similar tier. Free ATM withdrawals up to a monthly limit, then ฿200+ per withdrawal.
Solution 3: KBank Account
Once you open a Thai account, all withdrawals from KBank ATMs are free. Most convenient long-term.
Recommendation: Open KBank account as fast as possible. The fees you save pay for the minimal deposit within weeks.
Opening an Account for the Retirement Visa (฿800k requirement)
If you're planning to apply for a Non-OA retirement visa, you'll need ฿800,000 in a Thai bank account for 3 consecutive months before application.
Timeline:
- Month 1: Open account, deposit ฿800,000
- Months 2–3: Money sits untouched in account
- Month 4: Apply for retirement visa with bank letter
Which banks?
Bangkok Bank and KBank are the two most used for this purpose. Bangkok Bank is especially common because immigration knows it and accepts their standard "letter of guarantee" without question.
The letter:
Once you've held ฿800,000 for 3 months, ask the bank for a "letter of guarantee" or "statement of account" showing the balance. Immigration will accept it. Standard procedure.
Start early: Don't wait until 3 months before application. Open the account immediately upon arrival and deposit the money. This gives you flexibility and removes stress.
Insider Tips (from 6 years in Phuket)
KBank Yaowarat Road is your best shot
The branch manager knows expats, speaks English, and won't reject you for a tourist visa if you're reasonable. It's the flagship branch for expat banking in Phuket.
Hotel address letter works
If you don't have a rental contract yet, ask your hotel for a letter on hotel letterhead confirming you're staying there. Banks and immigration accept this. Most hotels do it for free.
Open before you need the 800k
If you're eventually doing a retirement visa, don't wait until 3 months before application. Open the account day one. This removes pressure and gives you a real Thai financial life in the meantime.
Wise first, KBank later
Arrive, set up Wise immediately for spending. Then visit KBank within a week when you have address proof. You won't miss a beat.
