Phuket Healthcare Guide 2026 — Hospitals, Doctors & Insurance

After 6 years and several hospital visits, I've formed strong views on Phuket's healthcare landscape. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is excellent — and expensive. Siriroj is solid and cheaper. And you absolutely need health insurance before you arrive.

🔑 From experience

Bangkok Hospital Phuket will not start non-emergency treatment without either confirmed insurance coverage (direct billing) or a cash deposit. Keep your insurance card accessible at all times. For emergencies, go to Bangkok Hospital — don't worry about the bill, get treated. For routine care (blood tests, GP visits), Siriroj is perfectly good and significantly cheaper.

Common questions
Healthcare FAQ
Is Bangkok Hospital Phuket good quality?
Yes, genuinely. It's JCI-accredited (the gold standard for international hospital quality) and regularly attracts medical tourists from across Southeast Asia. The cardiology, orthopedics, and oncology departments are particularly strong. After 6 years I've used it for everything from broken bones to full health checks. The quality is real — so is the price. Make sure you have insurance with direct billing there.
Can I use the government hospital Vachira as an expat?
Yes, you can walk in. But unless you speak Thai or have a Thai-speaking companion, it can be frustrating. Wait times are long. It's not set up for expats. For truly routine and non-urgent issues, it's fine. For anything serious, Bangkok Hospital Phuket or Siriroj will serve you better. The trade-off is price: Vachira is dramatically cheaper.
Do I need to register with a GP in Phuket?
There's no mandatory GP registration system like the UK NHS. You can walk into any hospital or clinic. Bangkok Hospital Phuket has an International Medical Center that functions like a GP practice. We recommend picking a primary care doctor you're comfortable with and building a relationship — it pays off when you need referrals or prescriptions.
What vaccinations do I need to live in Phuket?
Recommended vaccinations for Phuket include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, and Tetanus (if not up to date). Japanese Encephalitis is worth considering if you spend time in rural areas. Rabies is recommended if you have regular contact with animals — dog encounters are common in Phuket. Bangkok Hospital Phuket has a Travel Medicine department that can advise on your specific situation.
